アイノとアルヴァ二人のアアルトフィンランド―建築・デザインの神話

アイノ・マルシオ（1894-1949）が、まだ無名の建築家・アルヴァ・アアルト（1898-1976）の事務所を訪ねたのは1924年のことでした。アイノはそこで働きはじめ、ふたりは半年後に結婚します。アイノがパートナーになったことで、アルヴァに「暮らしを大切にする」という視点が生まれ、使いやすさや心地よさを重視した空間には、優しさと柔らかさが生まれます。

やがて国際的潮流となった合理主義的なモダニズム建築の流れのなかでも、ヒューマニズムと自然主義の共存が特徴として語られるアアルト建築は、独自の立ち位置を築きました。実用性や機能性を重視するモダニズムの理論は、ふたりのヴィジョンとも重なるものでしたが、夫妻は自国フィンランドの環境特性をふまえ、自然から感受した要素をモティーフとしたデザインを通じ、彼らなりの答えを探求していきます。アイノは54歳という若さで他界しますが、ふたりが協働した25年間は、かけがえのない創造の時間となりました。

互いの才能を認めあい、影響しあい、補完しあいながら作品をつくり続けたアアルト夫妻。本展は、これまで注目される機会の少なかったアイノの仕事にも着目することで、アアルト建築とデザインの本質と魅力を見つめ直し、新たな価値と創造性を見出そうとするものです。2020年にギャラリーエークワッド、竹中大工道具館にて開催した先行企画で展示された作品資料も網羅するほか、長年遺族のもとで保管されてきた初公開資料などもご紹介します。

Aino and Alvar Aalto: Shared Visions

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was one of Finland’s most famous architects. His dedication to meticulous design that adopted the perspectives of users, and to architecture rooted in regional cultures and societies, grew out of the deeply held beliefs of another Aalto, his wife Aino (1894-1949). This exhibition traces the 25-year story of their synergistic relationship and sharing of ideals, from when Aino met the still-unknown Alvar until her death long before his, and features documents and distinctive materials from the family archive.

展覧会のポイント・みどころ

◆アアルト建築は、「二人のアアルト」によってかたちづくられた？

◆デザイナーであり、ビジネスパーソンであったアイノ。その現代的・先駆的な女性像とファミリー像。

夫・アルヴァと対等な関係でアアルト事務所を牽引し、現在も続くアルテック社の初代アート・ディレクターを務め、自身も建築家・デザイナーとして活躍したアイノ・アアルト。家庭と普段の生活を愛する、二人の子どもの母親でもありました。生活に根ざしたその視点こそが、アアルト建築のエッセンスを形成したといえます。

◆初公開となる貴重な資料も

本展はフィンランドのアルヴァ・アアルト財団と、遺族によるファミリー・コレクションの全面的な協力により実現。家族の写真やプライベートなスケッチなどによるファミリー・コレクションは日本初公開となります。

◆Aino was a designer and business person. The modern and pioneering female image and family image.

She led the Aalto office on an equal footing with her husband, Alvar, and served as the first art director of Artek, which continues to this day. Aino Aalto worked as an architect and designer. She was also the mother of two children who loved home and everyday life. It is the perspective rooted in life that formed the essence of Aalto architecture.

◆Valuable material to be released for the first time

This exhibition is realized with the full cooperation of the Alvar Aalto Foundation in Finland and the family collection by the Aalto family. The family collection with family photos and private sketches will be unveiled for the first time in Japan.
